ABISMAL: The Twisting of the Body as an Exercise in Transforming the Gaze

Research Work, Video and Sound Installation and Publication

Original title: ABISMAL: la torsión del cuerpo como ejercicio de transformación de la mirada

The image is a body that contains forces. Until the moving image emerges, these forces remain suspended within the space that contains them, like the frame of a painting. This thesis proposes a return to the child’s gaze in order to question the way the moving image abandons its status as a window and transforms into a point of entry. Through an analysis of Focareta’s audiovisual installation Abismal, the thesis demonstrates how this new image can challenge reality itself, as well as the very notion of form, both in ontological terms and in its physical format. The linearity of thought is replaced by a construction that could be described as overlapping layers, in which time and space gradually merge into an increasingly complex space-time.
